ADU
City of Kingston Design Competition Entry
The Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is intended to be a secondary living space to provide a mix of housing opportunities to a community. Commonly called an In-law suite, it can be attached or separated from the main structure, but is designed to function independently as a living space. ADU’s have become a popular solution to the housing shortage created by single use zoning that has dominated our landscape. This ADU is designed to be adaptable, coming in many different configurations and easily built on different foundations to suit different terrain. This design is as comfortable as a camp in the deep woods as in an urban back yard. It’s essential goal is to provide an efficient design that is effective and affordable. The goal is $125,000 construction costs, which may be achievable in some occasions. We didn’t win, but several projects have spawned from this competition and I hope to see variations in real life soon.
