Rolling Hills Elementary - The solar school

Rolling Hills Elementary

Schradergroup Architecture, Philadelphia PA.

Completed in 2020, outside Newtown PA, Rolling Hills Elementary was a complete rehab of a 1960’s modernist, open concept concrete building. The plan took the original open classroom concept and updated it to modern classroom standards. Keeping the structure of the original concrete waffle structure in tact, corridors were opened up to create light wells in common spaces, doubling as bases for 200kw solar array. Light flows into the interior of the space and powers the building as well. The original 65,000 sf building was expanded to 85,000 to create additional theater spaces, flex classrooms, a new administration wing, expanded library and an outdoor classroom. This building achieved LEED Gold status. This project was completed while in the employ of Schradergroup Architects based out of Manayunk in Philadelphia.
